Railway Service Commissions have been renamed in January 1985 as Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs).

In the year 1998, all Railway Recruitment Boards came under the power of the Railway Recruitment Control Board, which was put down in the Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) to coordinate and smooth-running the working of Railway Recruitment Boards. Thus at present 20 Railway Recruitment Boards are running.

Railway Recruitment Board Bangalore was established in APRIL 1982. Railway Recruitment Board /Bangalore are housed in an autonomous office Millers Road, building in No.18, Bangalore Cantt. – 560046.

The Beginning

Originally in July 1942, as an experimental measure, a Service Commission with a Chairman and 2 members was founded for recruitment of Subordinate Staff on the then North West Railway. The position was assessed in the year 1945 and Services Commissions at Bombay, Lucknow, Madras and Calcutta were put down under Railway Board.

These Commissions were established with 2 fold functions of recruiting class III staff and also tender advice to General Managers for dealing with appeals from subordinate staff on disciplinary matters.
Later Developments

In the year 1948, the Indian Railway Enquiry Committee assessed working of commissions. While advising their permanency, suggested that the work related to appeal should be withdrawn so that commission can give undivided concentration to recruitments.

Chairman Bombay/Service Commission was given the supervisory role to Supervise Commissions at Madras, Calcutta and Lucknow.
In 1949, due to financial limitations a forbid was imposed on recruitments on Indian Railways thus numbers of commissions was abridged to one centrally situated at Bombay.

Objectives of Railway Recruitment Board Bangalore

These recruitment boards have been put down on the basis of the policies evolved over a period of time to accomplish the following objectives:

  • To diminish the work load on existing Railway Recruitment Boards.
  • To accelerate selection process
  • To bring the recruitment agencies closer to the applicants in the distant flung areas and interior sides.
  • To carry out recruitment on all India basis.
